WS 200: |
This course will familiarize you with some of the varieties of theoretical approaches feminists have taken to ground their work in a variety of fields. We will cover a variety of feminisms-liberal, radical, marxist-socialist, gender, multicultural, postmodern-as we attempt to answer the questions: "what is feminism?", "what is theory?", and "why do feminists need theories?".
The basic structure of our inquiry will follow Tong's book on Feminist Thought, supplemented by assigned and optional readings. Students should participate actively in discussion, raising questions from your reading and experience in other classrooms and life situations. Several films will be screened outside of class. Students might be asked to attend appropriate lectures and other events scheduled by Women's Studies and other organizations. The Daily Schedule WILL be adjusted to accommodate opportunities raised inside and outside the classroom.
