Reflected at the center of the great eye of God is the suffering Christ, and in the iris are scenes of the seven deadly sins. In order clockwise from the top are: GLUTTONY, SLOTH, LUXURIA, PRIDE, ANGER, JEALOUSY, and GREED. Surrounding the eye is the text: BEWARE, BEWARE, GOD SEES! We should despair that God sees nothing but sin.
The text on the scroll above reads : "FOR THEY ARE A NATION VOID OF COUNSEL, NEITHER IS THERE ANY UNDERSTANDING IN THEM. O THAT THEY WERE WISE, THAT THEY UNDERSTOOD THIS, THAT THEY WOULD CONSIDER THEIR LATTER END. " In the lower scroll: "I WILL HIDE MY FACE FROM THEM, I WILL SEE WHAT THEIR END SHALL BE. (Deuteronomy 32:28-29, 20)
The four outside roundels depict the end of life and the end of the world. In the upper left is a man is dying, and as skeletal Death comes through the door, he has an opporunity to do the right thing. He is an "Everyman" figure, whose experience is to be shared by all. In the upper right is the second coming and the Last Judgment. Will the man go to Heaven in the lower right? Or will he go to Hell, in the lower left?
And what about you? What does God see when he looks at you? Where will you end?
