COMPUTER LAB RULES
S203 Doane Hall of Art
KEY
Each student will receive a key to the Ad Hoc Hulmer Computer Lab. No deposit is necessary. If you do not return the key at the end of the term, you will fail the course. Please do not pass this key on to anyone else.
ROOM USE
Only use equipment for which you have received instruction. NO EXCEPTIONS!
Guests may certainly observe you at work (if there is enough space in the room), but only students enrolled in Art 590 are allowed to use this equipment.
No food or drink is permitted in the lab.
Do not ever leave the room open and unattended. Lock the room even for short bathroom trips.
CLOSING UP
Machine 1 ("nicholas") is a server, and must not be shut down. Please put this one to sleep when you are finished. At all times.
If the machines are getting heavy use, it will also be more energy efficient to put Machine 2 to sleep also rather than turning it off and powering it up frequently. However, if it is late in the evening and you are the last one in the lab, please do shut down Machine 2.
Everything else should be turned off when you are finished with it, including the scanning equipment and the lights.
EQUIPMENT
Machine 1: PowerMac 9500/200 (Let's call this server "nicholas " Machine address: 141.195.85.17)
- Will accept 3 1/2" floppy, a CD-ROM.
- This is the unit that houses our website and our /pub file, allowing us to FTP in and out of the system.
- This machine actually houses the shared /web/user files. It must be turned on in order for you to access your personal folders from Machine 2.
- Connects to the Nikon slide scanner
- Software programs: Adobe Photoshop 4.0; Netscape; Claris Home Page; Adobe Page Mill
Machine 2: PowerMac 8500/120 (Named???)
- Will accept a 3 1/2" floppy, a ZIP-Disc, and a CD-ROM.
- Connects to an Epson flatbed Scanner
- Software programs: Adobe Photoshop 3.0; Netscape; ScanTastic, Claris Home Page.
STORING WORK
For the duration of this project, you may store files on the hard drive of nicholas. The machines are linked for file sharing, so you may work on either machine, but store all of your work in your personal folder in the web directory. Feel free to create folders to organize your material within your main folder. When (or if) files become too large, we will discuss ways to trim our storage uses.
MOVING FILES
Use a 3 1/2" floppy disk to transfer files between the NeXT computer and the PowerMacs. When you initialize disks on the NeXT, be sure to specify Macintosh format. These disks are limited in size, but because our goal is to keep file-size manageable, their capacity is a useful guideline for us. If your file won't fit, it's probably too big anyway!
