ASSIGNMENT FOUR
Basic Images
In this assignment we will begin using the Hulmer Computer Lab to create web pages. You are required to follow all rules for use of the lab . If there are any questions or requests for exemptions, please consult Professor Carr.
- As preparation for this assignment, install the web page that you have already written onto our server nicholas in your userfile. Please follow conventions and title that page home.html. CONSULT THE PROFESSOR for the procedures here. We are still currently setting up the server and this process is somewhat tricky.
- Create a second HTML document linked to your home page. In this second page you must include ALL of the following:
- An image scanned with the flatbed scanner
- An image scanned with the slide scanner
- Navigational buttons, etc. to take you back to your home page.
Resources
- HTML programming resources. In addition to doing it all by hand in using the SimpleText feature of the Mac, there are also a couple of HTML software programs available for your use. I recommend Claris HomePage, because it has the easiest interface between WYSIWYG and HTML texts. See me for more information.
For basic HTML programming, you may work on the NeXT machine and transfer your files into the Powermacs. We need to be careful on this, because GIF files don't transfer simply across the platforms.
- ADOBE PHOTOSHOP. Adobe Photoshop is a very high end program designed to perform all possible manipulations of imagery and to transform images out of all mediums (and back again). In fact, our project will only utilize a small segment of its power. You are invited to learn as much or as little of this program as you like, but for anything outside of the scope of the Hulmer Project, you're more or less on your own.
For those of you interested in learning this program, the best advice is to work through the Tutorial.
For the Hulmer project work, you will receive detailed instructions on simple image manipulations.
- SCANTASTIC. Software for using the flatbed scanner attached to machine 2. You will receive basic instructions, or can consult the manual in the computer lab.
- COOLSCAN. The Nikon slide scanner is attached to nicholas, and is currently not operating. You will receive more specific instructions, or you may consult the manuals in the computer lab.
