Virtual Tours Online

Here are some sites that offer tours of physical spaces online. Which ones do you like? Anything you notice about what the technical specifications entail? Try these in a couple of browsers if possible. Which might take too long to load with a telephone modem?

Sites Submitted for Discussion

Cornell Campus tour
David comments: I found this one website that seems to have the same content of what we are going for. Its not the best but maybe we could get some ideas of what to do/ or not to do from it.
Colorado College Historic Walking Tour
David says: this was has a lot of good info but could use some work in the way it looks.. its not very attractive.
Historic Walking Tour of Washington DC
David says: this is a pretty crappy one. I think i like the individual pages but you cant go directly to next stop… have to go back to the main page.
University of Louisville Campus Tour
David says: has a different type of navigation but its also a bit confusing.. cluttered.
A Tour of Historic Higham Ferrers
David says: I like this one..its easy to navigate, you can tell that there was a lot of research done on the city, and the pictures correlate very nicely with the text.

College Tours

Colleges are committed to showing prospective students what the campus is like, and I found a great many campus tours online.

Allegheny College
Clickable map plus linear tour.
Campus Tours
This site lists many Virtual College Tours. Most annoying in that you click on the College link and the site comes up in a CampusTours frames, that you cannot get rid of. However, if you see a college tour you like, you could find its site through a search engine and look at on its own. The sites that it awards seem to be high-tech solutions, featuring QuickTime or WebCam VR.
Botanic Garden at Smith College
We looked at this site in the first assignment and liked it.
University of Hartford Virtual Tour
Pretty high tech, allowing you to pan a 360o view of selected sites, hear music and narration. Requires Flash Player, QuickTime. Full of sound and fury, signifying?
Amherst College
The history page provides an interesting model,
The Amherst virtual tour won a campustours award. Map in second window opens information in a third window. Requires JavaScript.
Anderson College
Click on the Online Tour for a pop-up window, interactive map w/ rollovers, more JavaScript. Once into the tour, can choose from a pull-down menu or go through in specified order. How do you get back to that jazzy map?

Historic Sites

Historic sites have the same problem we do, trying to show growth over time as well as the spatial layout of the present. How do these sites manage it? Or do they?

Mount Vernon, the Mansion Tour or the Grounds Tour
Straightfoward pull-down menu to different pages.
Roman Open Air Museum Hechingen-Stein
Viewer has option to click on several different views. A few 360o views also available, needing Java or QuickTime.
Huntington Gardens
The tour includes QuickTime 360o views.
A site devoted to Louis May Alcott's Orchard House begins with a intro page.
The interior rooms of Louisa May Alcott's home can be seen in a JavaScript pop-up window.

Gardens and Arboreta

The American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta
Site has daily and monthly site features with a cyber-tour.
National Register of Historic Places, National Park Service
Official designation as an arboretum might involve listing on the Register.
Lakewold Gardens Home Page.
Pretty snazzy opening graphic, also a Cyber Tour

HTML Examples

Pelletier Library Sample
Helen McCullough is working on this redesign of the library page. The layout is in tables, and JavaScript changes the images in one of the cells as you mouseover.
JavaScript Image Slide Show
Displays a series of images in an automated slide show, a pulldown menu, or the various slideshow controls that Are included, such as previous and next. There are many such interfaces as this. Although we can control the text on the buttons, we can't control the form of the buttons.
JavaScript Changing Multiple Images
Dynamically change multiple images by simply moving your mouse over one image. Trouble here is that these are images and we want to involve text.
JavaScript Pulldown Menu
JavaScript Thumbnail Navigator
Allows the visitor to easily browse with Previous and Next through several thumbnail images (all of which are preloaded so they show up instantly). Then they can click the Go button to be taken to the selected thumbnail's full size image.
JavaScript Image Description
Offer your visitors a short description when they put their cursor on an image link. Give more information about what is offered at a site, if it is free or not, or anything else you think is important for them to know. The window (actually a form box) can be any size and placed anywhere on the page. Longer text could be made to scroll. The images wouldn't have to be individual thumbnails, but could be hot spots on a clickable map.
