COMPUTER LAB RULES
A224 Doane Hall of Art
KEY
Each student will receive a key to the Ad Hoc Hulmer Computer Lab. No deposit is necessary. If you do not return the key at the end of the term, you will fail the course. Please do not pass this key on to anyone else.
ROOM USE
- Only use equipment for which you have received instruction. NO EXCEPTIONS!
- Guests may certainly observe you at work (if there is enough space in the room), but only students enrolled in Art 590 are allowed to use this equipment.
- No food or drink is permitted in the lab.
- Do not ever leave the room open and unattended. Lock the room even for short bathroom trips.
CLOSING UP
- Make sure that your files have been removed from the machine before you leave. (Station B is especially crammed with scanning trials.) See Uploading.
- Unless someone is waiting to use the station, all machines should be turned off when you are finished with them, including the scanning equipment.
Go to Special > Shut Down.
- Turn off the lights.
EQUIPMENT
The Art Computer Lab is furnished with Macintosh computers that will accept 3 1/2" floppies, CD-Roms, or a Zip disk. On most machines you will find Adobe Photoshop 5.0, Dreamweaver (version 1 or 2), Fetch (FTP) software, and browsers (Netscape in several versions or Internet Explorer). Advanced software packages like Director and Flash is also installed, but will not be part of the official instruction in this class.
Some machines are set up for specialized functions. We will make most use of digital scanning equipment set up on Station B. Available to us is a Nikon Slide Scanner running Coolscan v. 1.05 and an Epson flatbed scanner running Epson Twain software.
Station G is the newest machine and among other software packages, runs Adobe Photoshop 6.0. Video equipment, printers, and other special equipment is available on other machines. If you have special needs, please ask.
STORING WORK
Please be sensitive to the fact that many people are using the equipment in the Art Computer Lab. Do not store your work on the machine. Zip disks are available with 100 MB and 250 MB capacities, which should be enough space for the work of this project. In fact, although 3 1/2" floppy discs are limited in size, because our goal is to keep file-size manageable, their capacity is a useful guideline for us. If your file won't fit, it's probably too big anyway!
UPLOADING FILES
Use the Fetch program to upload files to be stored on your network account or in your web space.
