Green Allegheny Assignment Four
Creating Images

In this assignment we will begin using the Hulmer Computer Lab to create digital images for our web pages. You are required to follow all rules for use of the lab . If there are any questions or requests for exemptions, please consult Professor Carr or Professor Roland.
In order to create the best images, we must be aware of the basics of digital images, including resolution, color and file formats.
- As preparation for this assignment, upload the web page that you have already written into your server space. Please follow the conventions and name that page index.html.
- Create a second HTML document linked to your main home page. In this second page you must include ALL of the following:
- An image scanned with the flatbed scanner
- An image scanned with the slide scanner
- Navigational items (buttons, arrows, links, to take you back to your main page.)
Resources
- HTML programming resources. You can continue to use UltraEdit or WordPad on any machine to codes your web pages. The equivalent basic text program on the Mac is SimpleText feature of the Mac.
The Art Computer Lab machines are also installed with Dreamweaver webdesign software. You have had the opportunity to learn the basic features of this program through Educational Computing Services. We will spend more time with this program in a later class.
Photoshop is one of a line of products made by Adobe. For graphic design, there is simply no better program, but the software is not cheap, and there's not even a workable demo version. However, if all you need to do is manipulate images for the web, you might find a lower-end program serves your needs. PaintShopPro, from Jasc Software, comes highly recommended. Demo version is full-featured. |
- ADOBE PHOTOSHOP. Adobe Photoshop is a very high end program designed to perform all possible manipulations of imagery and to transform images out of all mediums (and back again). In fact, our project will only utilize a small segment of its power. You are invited to learn as much or as little of this program as you like, but for anything outside of the scope of this website, you are more or less on your own. For the Green Allegheny project, you will receive detailed instructions on simple image manipulations.
For those of you interested in learning more about this program, the best advice is to work through the Tutorial in the User's Guide. You will find copies of these manuals in the Art Computer Lab.
- EPSON TWAIN. Software for using the flatbed scanner attached to Station B. You will receive basic instructions, or can consult the manual in the computer lab.
- COOLSCAN. The Nikon slide scanner is attached to Station B. You will receive more specific instructions, or you may consult the manuals in the computer lab.
