Midterm 1 | Midterm 2 | Final Exam | Paper One | Paper Two

Midterm Exam 1

A take-home NOTE CHANGE exam consisting of short essays on material covered in the first part of the class (Units I-III), at least one based on discussion of slides. Due Monday, February 16th. New Date: Due Monday, February 26th in class. Midterm One was handed out in class on February 16th and is also available online.

Midterm Exam 2
An in-class exam consisting of short essays based on slide comparisons, covering the themes in western landscape and villa architecture. Due Wednesday, April 2nd.

Final Exam
Exam (I) Monday, May 7th, 7-10 pm. In-class essays based on the final two units (Architecture, Chinese landscape painting) This exam will not include a slide examination, but images will be made available for your study purposes.

Paper 1 Labors of the Months A short paper in which you create a series of the labors of the months for a location of your choice. For more information, see the detailed assignment that will also be handed out in class.
Due in class, Wednesday, February 7th Note change of date.

Paper 2 Analysis of a landscape
An 8-10 page research paper on a single monument of art that exemplifies a relationship to nature or to landscape. You are expected to analyze the art first with respect to what is portrayed and how the artist solves the problem of portraying nature or embodying a relationship to nature. Second, you must analyze the work according to the traditions of building or art-making that we have examined in class. To understand these traditions, consider the cultural, economic and religious values expressed.

The work you choose should be related in some way to the material presented in class, and your topic must be approved by the professor. You will be expected to schedule a meeting with the professor to discuss your choice of work and various techniques you might pursue in its analysis. A detailed assignment will be handed out in class. Due in class, Friday, April 20th. But see the Final Paper Policy.
