EXAMPLES OF STUDENT DESIGNED MINORS
PLEASE NOTE. These are only quick suggestions to give you some ideas. Your discussion probably should be a little bit longer, stressing the intellectual coherence of your program. | Assignment 3 |
Student Designed Minor in Architecture:
Although no courses at Allegheny deal with architecture alone, by combining aspects of art and art history, I believe I would be able to get enough background in architecture to get into graduate school, and get some practice on designing my own buildings.
| Art 110- Art 111 | Survey of art history, to become familiar with the great architecture of the past. |
| Art 247 American Art. | Here I expect to learn about the major architects and their works, important since I'm an American. |
| Art 155 Drawing | .I understand that architects need to know how to draw and design. |
| Summer Internship | Internship with an architecture firm, probably in Pittsburgh where I live, during the summer. Could take this credit / no-credit. |
| Ind Study Art 490 | Focussed study on one or two major architects working in the U.S. today. I would do research on their current work and write a major paper. This would give me a good idea about important trends in architecture. |
| Ind Study Art | In this studio project I would like to develop designs for a houses, preferably my ideal home, including a studio office. The end result of this would be a small exhibition of a series of plans, elevations, and landscape ideas to show a house that responded to environmental needs. I would probably work with a computer specialist and design my house using the latest CAD software. |
Student Designed Minor in Problems of Death from Cancer
Ever since my grandfather died of cancer when I was living at home, I have been interested in the special problems of how older people face disease and death. This minor would work well with my Pre-Med major, adding courses in the social sciences and humanities to try to understand a situation that is more than just a physical, medical issue.
| Biology 060 | Cancer: Causes and Consequences. This new course is a good introduction to the basic medical issues about cancer. |
| Psychology 160 | Life Span Developmental Psychology. This course on human development from birth to death will help me address special issues faced by older patients. |
| Psychology 172 | Health Psychology. The part of this course that deals with reactions to disease will be particularly helpful to me. |
| Religious Stud 345 | Death and Dying in Western Culture |
| Religious Stud 500 | Internship with Hospice of Crawford County. Work with terminally ill patients. |
Student Designed Minor in Italian Culture
Because my ancestors came from Italy, I am particularly interested in exploring my national heritage. Although many of these courses could be taken at Allegheny College, my ideal would be to do a semester abroad in Italy, taking courses toward my major in Political Science also. I understand that courses I take in the Political Science department would not count toward this minor, and nor would the first year of my language study.
| Art 225 | Art of the Italian Renaissance |
| History 201 | Europe in the Age of Popes and Princes |
| History 302 | The Italian Renaissance |
| Critical Languages | Beginning Italian language, one and two. One year of study of Italian can be taken through this sub-section of Modern Languages. I intend to continue my study of language when I study abroad. |
| English, Independent Study 590 | Modern Italian Film Directors. Prof. Lloyd Michaels, who edits the Film Review will direct this independent study focussing on Fellini and Bertolucci |
| TBA | Advanced work in a study abroad in Italy program. |
