Experiences outside of the traditional classroom, what we're now calling "experiential learning," can be a significant part of your program at Allegheny College. Real-world experiences can give you hands-on activities relating to your acaedemic studies and help you discover what kind of work you would like to do. These experiences also impress future employers about your abilities to translate classwork into practical situations.

What internships, off-campus study or ACCEL opportunities interest you? Which of these would make a good supplement to the majors and minors you are considering? In a brief essay of one or two pages, discuss one or two specific ideas that you would like to follow up on. Your ideas could be plans either for credit courses, to be included as part of your major or minor program, or non-credit internships that would supplement your academic experience.

Most internships are available for the summers after sophomore or junior years, or involve being off-campus in the junior year. You will be asked to explore majors & minors explored in Assignment Three. How might these experiential learning opportunities fit in with your academic plans? What problems would you face in trying to schedule this kind of experience?

Due: It would be ideal for you to complete this assignment mid-semester and schedule an appointment with the professor to discuss your progress. On request, an extension may be granted, but this paper MUST be completed in order to gain CREDIT for AP102. Bring the essay to our meeting, or put a copy into my college mailbox, my departmental mailbox in the Art Galleries, or on my office door. I will let you know when I get it.

CAN'T FIND THE INTERNSHIP YOU WANT?

If you already have a place in mind where you'd like to get some summer experience, don't despair if they aren't listed in the internship database. Most places are happy to have interns and would probably respond positively to your interest. Just ask for help (from your advisor) in arranging an internship.

Keep in mind, however, that

  • Most for-credit internship are not paid
  • Arrangements for credit-bearing internships must be made before you start work.

What you need to know for this assignment:

The College has tried to center information about these co-curricular activities in the ACCEL Office, Allegheny College Center for Experiential Learning, in Reis Hall. Check them out online.

Individual departments receive information all the time about off-campus programs, internships, and other discipline-related opportunities. Look at the bulletin boards in the departmental building. Announcements get posted.

Ask for information in the department you're interested in.

Family friends are great connections for internship opportunities!

Online Resources

  • ACCEL Office, Allegheny College Center for Experiential Learning
  • ACCEL maintains a database of opportunities. You'll need your student ID number to log in.
  • Put the keyword "internships" into your favorite search engine. Many site will come up like:
  • National Internships,
  • Internships.com, or
  • JobWeb. Be smart, though, and double-check anything that sounds too good to be true. Internships shouldn't just be unpaid slave labor!
